Moving to NYC or Leaving NYC Private School

Specifically for Those Moving to New York City

The Department of Education (DOE) will only begin the admissions process for children who are currently residing in New York City. This applies to any type of school, at every grade level.

All Grades: Once your child is a resident of New York City, you must visit the Family Welcome Center (formerly called the Borough Enrollment Office) that services your NYC address for assistance in securing a seat for your child.

Grades K-5: The DOE recommends that you find housing in the zone of a school you like and to which you would be willing to send your child, because it is highly unlikely that your child will be placed in a grades K-5 Gifted and Talented (G&T) classroom upon entering the New York City public school system. The Anderson School has only G&T classrooms in grades K-5 and admission to those classes is run by the DOE.

Researching Schools

The website InsideSchools.org has a very comprehensive page about finding a school in NYC. (Click on the link "New to NYC" in the first paragraph.) InsideSchools.org is a great resource that can inform you about all public schools at every grade level in New York City. On the InsideSchools home page, you can begin your search for write-ups about schools by using a map of NYC school districts, by grade level and neighborhood names or by school name or number.

The Department of Education has a page on its website with information for families who are new to NYC. The DOE's homepage has a “School Search” feature to search for schools by an address, a school name, grade level or by borough. There is a school directory for every district with admissions information and some basic school performance statistics for each school in that district. You can also call 311 (in New York City) for help.

Applying to Grades K-5 Gifted and Talented (G&T) Classrooms

(Updated 11/17/17)

Grades K & 1: If your child becomes a full-time resident of NYC by November 13, 2017, you may begin the G&T admissions process. The deadline to begin the process is Monday, November 13, 2017- visit our Kindergarten-3rd Grade Admissions page for more information. If your child lived in NYC on or before November 13, but you did not file a request to have your child tested for G&T classrooms by the DOE, then you missed the deadline to begin the Department of Education’s G & T admissions process for fall 2018. If you moved to NYC after 11/13,2017, the DOE will administer the G & T testing in summer 2018, but only for children entering grades K & 1 (and only for children who moved to NYC after 11/13/2017), though seats in G & T Kindergartens and 1st grade classrooms are extremely limited. Your child needs to register for grades K or 1 at your local general education school for fall 2018, as a G&T seat is not guaranteed. If your child does not get a G & T placement in the summer of 2018, you will be able to begin the G & T admissions process for fall 2019 in October 2018.

Grades 2 & 3: If your child becomes a full-time resident of NYC by November 13, 2017, you may begin the G&T admissions process. The deadline to begin the process is Monday, November 13, 2017 - visit our Kindergarten-3rd Grade Admissions page for more information. If your child moved to NYC after 11/13/2017 (or if your child lived in NYC on that date, but you did not file a request to have your child tested for G&T classrooms by the DOE), you missed the deadline to begin the Department of Education’s G & T admissions process for fall 2018. Your child needs to register for grade 2 or 3 at your local general education school for fall 2018, and you will be able to begin the G & T admissions process for Fall 2019 in October 2018.

Grades 4 & 5: You can read about the process on our 4th & 5th Grade Admissions page.
